Do your research up-front. Figure out what you want to see. There's a plethora of things to do --- from museums to clubs to national monuments to shopping. Decide what's for you and plan it very well. Not to the minute, of course, because New York is a walking city and you should a short time ago take it surrounded by. But it's good to hold an idea so that you can consolidate the location that you travel to respectively day.
Take the subway, don't gamble away all of your money on cabs. Don't be afraid of it, it's if truth be told pretty easy. Visit the touristy places - there's zilch wrong with spending time at the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty or 30 Rock. Take a hoof it through Central Park! See a Broadway show.
Book tickets in mortgage, it's easier. You can wait until last-minute and seize reduced costs, but they're not as great seats and you can finale up spending half your year waiting in flash.
Don't eat at manacle restaurants - but buy a pretzel from the pretzel guy on the street. If you're walking slow, stay to the side, people will push olden you because they're in a rush to work. If you're on an escalator and not walking up, stay right for impossible to tell apart reason.
New York City is unforced to get around for the most fragment - it's generally a grid, near avenues going north-south and numbered streets going west-east. So if you're walking up sixth avenue from 41st to 42nd, you're heading north. Things get a bit more hairy surrounded by the Village.

I just go to nyc for the first time last week. Advice: dont be afraid to discuss to people, at hand really nice. See as much as you can, I seen batery park, the statue of free will, the ww2 navy memorial, the bull statue, ate at great rays pizza, went to federal park, and seen the entire metropolitan mueseum of art surrounded by one day! Dont chitchat to people selling anything or ethnic group begging for money... you cant win away from them. other than that only have fun its a great city. oh, dont drive. embezzle the train in and go and get an all daytime metro pass purloin as many subway rides as you want for seven bucks, there's other musicians and performing artists in the subway.
