Any of the Smithsonian Museums. I'm partial to the Museum of Natural History and the National Zoo. Of course, the Capitol and the White House, Georgetown is nice, and although not in the District, I prefer Olde Towne Alexandria.
You cannot possibly see all nearby is to see in a afternoon but I would suggest starting with Ford's Theater and next the Smithsonian Institute. Chances of seeing the Pres. are slim to none. He's a busy guy. They do give tours at the White House and he have been specified to correspond with the tourists from time to time. Another place to see is not certainly in DC but simply off Rt.1 south going on for 20 miles to Mt. Vernon. George Washington's' House.
jefferson memorial. congress building. lincoln memorial. the local complex rock cafe is nice. white house. good luck. hold fun
If you similar to really great chili, the best chili place in the world is within Old Town Alexandria, on King Street. It's called Hard Times Chili Cafe. You won't regret it!
If your cousin is a lobbyist, have him spring for tickets to the Kennedy Center for a suitable musical. If that is not your point, have him receive box seats for the Washington Nationals baseball games.

As far as seeing George Weasel Bush at the White House, that is to say very slim possibility. For one piece, Dick Cheney keeps Weasel pen up until it is time for a photo op and then trots him out for cameras close to a trained chimpanzee. Actually, a trained chimp is better than George Bush in so several ways that I would vote for a chimp before voting for Bush. Weasel Bush's approval rating is around 28% right presently. In case you do not know, that means that 72% of Americans are against Bush. Pretty incredible that a creature who lost the popular vote still got to be President and presently 72% of the country is against him.

Bush lied - 3,500 Americans have died.
Oh, I'm gonna lurk at this cross-question, b/c I'm going this summer! :) I'm going to be in the National Independence Day Parade. w00t!

And is the Smithsonian within D.C.? I think I want to pop in there.
dc is a great place to drop by as well as the outer community. walk to the usual tourist spots like the smithsonian museums, national shopping arcade which faces both the captial and the monument, georgetown or 16th street over towards silverspring,md, arlington,va is cool and so is crystal city,va dc have a metro train system which is pretty simple and color coordinated but if you have trouble only just ask someone. stay away from Southeast dc or anyplace that is outside of downtown because if your not from here you dont know what to expect. and it can be dangerous sometimes.except that there are so several places to visit. freshly remember for the train u should stay either on the red column or yellow column to get where on earth u want to go. dont progress on any other train because u will get lost lol. but for any other question about dc basically look it up in google. enjoy fun.

from a dc native :-)
I was so surprised on my first call on by what a wonderful city it is to walk surrounded by. And, they have a fantastic subway to achieve around.
1) Smithsonian all museums that you are interested within
2) Georgetown for the history (the first area settled within Washington)
3) The Jefferson Monument. Far more important and attractive than any other I think contained by its beauty alone.
4) Stroll along the Potomac, over le infant's wonderful bridge
5) read the history of construction of W.D.C. since going there
6) Robert E Lee's home at Arlington. To see what this man give up by accepting a role in duration he never wanted nor asked for.
7) The Vietnam Memorial.

Forget who you are related to and how impressive that may seem; remember where on earth you are and everyone who went since you at that place. Everywhere you go you will be walking within history's footsteps. And don't forget, the Washington Zoo is part of the Smithsonian. And capably worth the trip.
