Old NY vs. hot NY?
i always read contained by magazines and different articles nearly the ''old ny vs. new ny''. what is this referring to? i know that fresh york is a lot more ''trendy'' and expensive than it used to be. is it simply referring to the bohemian ways of 1980's NY?
also, new yorkers contained by general come across to be nostalgic for the days of out-of-date new york. why's that?

The ONLY transformation you see in NYC presently compared to NYC of the 1980s and 1990's is that crime rate has gone down some. Otherwise, NYC today really sucks! You are constantly seeing small mom-and-pop businesses closing along near some great dive bars closing lone to be replaced by just another Starbucks, Duane Reade, another unnecessary apartment complex, or freshly a vacant spot because not a soul is dumb enough to money the ridiculous rent most landlords are charging. The mayor seems to be doing nil about cap these rents either. The places I once cherished surrounded by NYC are on the verge of closing down as ably just to brand name room for another Duane Reade or office complex. ONe finishing comment..even that old diner within Chelsea that has be around since the 1950's just shut its doors. Other boroughs such as Brooklyn are nice ample to welcome some of these small businesses a contemporary home. All of these HORRIBLE changes adjectives started when Bloomberg became mayor. He screwed up this city because adjectives he wanted to do be build more cooporate businesses and offer more places for rich bastards to live. He even looked-for to build on Central Park at one point, but that proposal was voted down. I'm praying that when NYC finally get a new mayor, things will start improving again. Who wants to live contained by a city where the individual place to walk from you apartment is a Duane Reade, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and more bureau complexes? This eventually will happen if this trend continues!
I know growing up on Long Island, whenever we got the randomness to go to the city it be really exciting, and a little bit fearsome. I remember Joan Rivers once joked that she be off to NYC and she be taking her bullet-proof vest with her. NYC hindmost in those days be gritty, real. Nowadays it's overly catered to tourists, it's be cleaned up by Rudy Guiliani, and it doesn't have that slither that it used to.
I definitely miss the exciting get the impression I used to get when I come to the city. I live here now, and it conspicuously doesn't have that bite to it - it's become overwhelmingly commercial. That's not to vote I don't love it! It just used to be smaller quantity trendy and full of pretentious "transplants".
I'm not sure I completely agree near the other posters. I'm 59 and sure I get wistful for the old days at CBGBs, the Mud Club and lots other places, but if you go to Brooklyn in attendance are more cool clubs than ever, just not surrounded by Manhattan. I miss having friends living within artists lofts in SoHo, when in attendance was almost no shopping or tourists but in a minute I know plenty of artists in Brooklyn and Queens. Cities make over, but NYC has other been expensive and trendy almost by definition beforehand SoHo was an artist district it be the Village and when that got too expensive folks moved to SoHo and TriBeCa - now its Brooklyn and Queens. If your cool you will find the cog of the city you belong in, next or now. Low crime is other a good entry. I will miss Cony Island though, but most of what I remember is long gone and they do have a baseball squad now - and the the deep isn't going anywhere.
I agree beside Crys V. New York City is nothing resembling it used to be in lingo of looks and "personality".
It has it's pros/cons when you compare to how it looked contained by the '80s when I was a kid to the style it looks now.
I like how it looked back within the days. I enjoyed seeing the graffitti on the trains cars. That's what made New York, New York. To me some graffitti is a form of art. The low rents. The mom and pop shoppes that have to close down because of the economy and secure stores. :( The beginning of what we in a minute call "Hip Hop".
I don't miss the stinky train stations, the crime, the lights switching on and sour on the trains (red ones), the beginning of the crack era, etc.
Unfortunately, I doubt NYC will renovate to what it once was. I have to leave the city I used to christen home because it became unaffordabel to me. :(
Well, I can only right to be heard what it means to me. I be a kid in the 80s and NY at that time be crime-ridden and dirty, but something about it feel more authentic, I guess. Does NY look better now near all the graffiti past its sell-by date the trains and most of the buildings? No doubt. But I miss that time because it was exploding near so much creativity and expression. And let's face it: It be kind of cool. Some of the artwork be amazing. Now it's gone, for the most part. And the matured Coney Island--which was dirty and higgledy-piggledy, but freaky and fun in a accurate way--is soon to be replaced with a Disneyfied publication of itself. Will it be cleaner and more pleasing to the eye? Probably. Will it have like character and get the impression it used to have? No means of access. I mean, isn't the reality that Yankee Stadium--the house the Ruth built--and Shea are both being leveled to variety way for the "strange and improved" stadiums an indication of this? And so many aged, great buildings and houses are being replaced by cookie-cutter condos and co-ops. Not to mention the "spanking new NY" seems to be cut out with the sole purpose for the rich since the cost of rent is skyrocketing. (Just ask the former owners of CBGB's) Improvements are nice, but it's sad when they come at the cost of losing a city's soul.
Old New York kick New New York's (a)ss, hands down. Old New York be the New York that gave birth to Hip Hop, Cool Jazz, and Salsa Music. Old New York be the NYC that gave birth to great artists, slam poets and spoken word. Old New York be streetwise, had the articulation, the swagger, the attitude. Old New York was Robert DeNiro, Spike Lee, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Frank Lucas, Nas, KRS-One, Beastie Boys, Rakim and Jay-Z. Old New York be Seinfeld, New New York is Sex and the CIty. Old New York was quarter waters and a box of phillies at the corner store. Old New York be Coney Island, the Yankees, hell even the Dodgers. Old New York was gyros contained by Astoria, lechon in el barrio, and soul food on 125th street. Old New York be fly, even though the outfit cost less than 25$. Old different york was the SHITTTTTT
New New York is soft. New New York is full of crappy hipsters and shitty yuppies beside their shallow, self centred worldviews. New New York mode gentrification, the destruction of neighborhoods like harlem and washington height that have be there for 75+ years. New New York channel 2000$ rent, 5$ coffee (not cawffee) and $3 ice cream cones cuz mr. softee go to the rich neighborhoods. New New York aint "how ya doin?" or "what's good?", its "accurate afternoon"...New New York is a fake, commercial, lame, booring veneer hidin a bunch of midwesterners who wanna hijack our identity as New Yorkers" even though they can't be us. You Know things are gettin doomed to failure when there are more material New Yorkers in Staten Island and Nassau County than surrounded by Brooklyn.literally you're more likely to here a NY elocution OUTSIDE of NY than you are in the city.
