I'm going to Philadelphia near my husband on a business trip. We will be staying surrounded by Center City. Will it be
safe for me to totter around by myself during the day?
Answers:
depends where u shift
Center City is the safest place contained by Philadelphia. It is very safe and sound.
Some of these answers are a little misleading. Transient city-dwellers shouldn't over-dramatize urban existence with big caveat.
Of course, use your common sense and trust your instincts. But do not paralyze yourself beside fear and paranoia. That will with the sole purpose compromise your ability to relax and own a fun time in a great city.
I lived contained by Center City for 12 years until 2006. I never had an incident. When out-of-town friends and household visit (including my mom, sisters and infantile nieces), they freely walk through downtown Center City-- and habitually without me as a tour guide or body guard.
Here's a enumerate of things for you to consider during your visit. (**) indicates a personal favorite and strong counsel.
Movies:
Ritz 5 (2nd & Walnut)
Ritz Bourse (4th & Chestnut)
The Ritz theaters feature mostly independent films. Therefore, the audiences tend to be more fully developed and well behave. Plus, Ritz always show excellent societal, art and foreign films. Great place to waste a few hours!

Only if you have a plan as to where on earth you'll be going, what time frame and ask at the hotel what they would recommend. Have you cell phone ready and relish the wonderful city of brotherly love.
Center city is busy during the light of day, there are businesses everywhere. You should enjoy absolutely no problem as long as you aren't adjectives through alley ways. Rittenhouse square have a ton of shops and cafes... I don`t know you'd like that.
Absolutely, Center City id probably the safest place within the city to walk around during the morning, it's even safe to saunter around at night. I moved to Philly from Connecticut 4 yrs ago and Center City is lacking a doubt the safest place in the city, light of day or night. If you stay on the prevalent streets like walnut street between broad and up in attendance are great shops and nice restaurants, there are other tons of people out during the time shopping and eating lunch. Maybe ask the hotel what hinterland you should stay in, I wouldn't pocket the subway alone if you don't know where your going, but if you are in recent times walking around Center City I would worry at adjectives.
Just keep an eye out is adjectives...it's just similar to everything else, a little adjectives sense goes a long agency.
Center City itself is usually fine, especially if it's during the day. Walnut Street is packed to the gunwales with shops and restaraunts, which way it's also packed near people.
I don't know how far you plan on walking, but pretty much of late stay clear of the colleges (Temple, UPenn, Drexel U). It's not necessarily the students, but just the areas they're contained by are a bit sheisty. You'd actually hold to stray pretty far from City Hall on foot until that time you really ran into any trouble though.
Just be smart, but wallow in the City.
You should be fine. There are a lot of ethnic group who walk around center city during the afternoon. There are some areas of the city that you may not want to walk around much though.
Yes. Just resembling any other major city. 99% of the empire will ignore you, the other 1% will be checking you out.
Center City is fine, the historical areas are fine, be wary if you wander over by UPenn.
As long as you stay on the biggest roads you should be ok, I've walked around the side alleys at hours of darkness and didn't have any problems, I've never taken the subways though, so I don't know if specifically safe. Of course, I am sure near are many impossible neighborhoods in Philadelphia, I've see some pretty bad neighborhoods within DC and San Francisco.
