While it does get HOT and highly humid in August, it is a time next to a lot of great stuff stirring outdoors.
There are free concerts in the parks, as someone else mentioned. There is "Shakespeare surrounded by the Park" at the Delacourt Theater in Central Park - also free! There are the outdoor movies surrounded by Bryant Park - all free. It's a great time to really gain to know the City, to wander around and surface like a New Yorker!

so i recommend the winter time, like around jan/feb.
No, its path too hot here. The best time to visit is when it's cold: you can other put on another layer of clothes, but theres singular so much you can take sour!
Yes. You will be able to see free concerts surrounded by Central Park and catch a ballgame at Yankees Stadium or Shea Stadium. Also contained by August the US Open Tennis Tournament is held in New York at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park contained by Queens.
Not really, as the song go "Summer in the City" alot relatives try to get away from NYC and walk to the Hamptons or the NJ shore; your best month to visit is probably a month subsequently, mid to late September, a bit better weather.
