You'll similar to the small city that Portland has to propose, it's a great place and only more or less 1-2 hours from the mountains, if you like skiing, or camp and about 2 hours from the seaside.

Portland State University is a good institution, parking is a pain since it's within the middle of down town but the campus has the largest student body surrounded by all of Oregon. PSU have a great business program as well as a computer programs. The university have changed so much that they are buying out old buildings for more classes.
I like my time at PSU while I was studying here, I have no regrets roughly attending the local city school. I met alot of relations and the experience was great. The entity that PSU had that other colleges didn't hold was access to down town adjectives the time. So if you don't feel similar to eatting at PSU, just meander or take the bus downtown (which is similar to 15 min walk) and eat and shop down town.

My suggestion would be to come up to PSU and way of walking around the campus, see how it's close to downtown.
Portland is a totally relaxed city. It has a slight urban touch, but unlike any other lareg city, it is very comfortable.

There is a homeless problem, and the citizen tend to be much too liberal and polite to do anythnig just about it. However it's still an extremely safe city.

Portland State sits right on the point of downtown and the untrained eye cannot tell that a university is even within. Other than that it isn't a bad university. It does not have that college surface that most schools hold, as it is a commuter school. It is heavily patroned by citizens who work downtown adn are shooting for a second degree.
Portland is a great city. Laid put a bet on, liberal, lots of bikes, great food...etc. PSU is a decent university. Not great, but fully clad. Some departments, like Sociology, Urban Planning, and a few others excel. The rest are okay. It's a academy in a more urban setting near a pretty small campus compared to some other universities. The 'park blocks' run through PSU so within is a large pedestrian shopping arcade behind some of the most important buildings. The university is spread between 15-20 blocks or so, I think. Some of the professors are great and some not so much. It really depends on your main. Many people who step to PSU are 'place bound' students. That is they live in Portland and don't want to walk out and go to PSU. That's why I get my masters degree in attendance. I was a place bound student. I found my undergraduate amount at a larger, Midwest, state university to be much more challenging, but I don't regret for a second going to PSU for my masters. Portland is a great place to be.
