Where is the closest mountain drive from SF East Bay?
I've recently moved from Colorado to Antioch, CA (East Bay). I miss the mountains!! I used to know how to drive to the mountain in 20 minutes. I saw them from my veranda. Now, I'm stuck in spreading suburbia. "Mt Diablo" is roughly a 30 min drive; it simply does not compare; I've been to Yosemite & Tahoe; lovely, but the drive is a killer.
So, please narrate me where I can travel to drive through the mountains. Also, where can I dance to escape into the outdoors? Traffic around here is awful, so I need specific instructions. THANKS!

Don't style guru the entire East Bay based on Antioch. It's concrete to notice anything bar the strip malls, traffic, and nearby factory. Take a drive up highway 4. (Better to take the Antioch Bridge to hwy 12, and reconnect beside 4 in Angels Camp.) It can be done as a sunshine trip, and there are divine mountain passes above Angels Camp and Sonora. Keep contained by mind that California mountains are compared to sea smooth unlike the Colorado mountains which begin at a complex base. Personally, I judge California mountains are just as pretty as those contained by Colorado.
Sadly, Colorado-sized mountains are only surrounded by the Sierras, about 4 hrs away. Mount Diablo must appear like an anthill to you! 8^)
There are some nice 'hills' along the coast. North of San Francisco is Mt. Tamalpais but north of in attendance along the coast is very pretty and interesting. South are the Santa Cruz Mountains, which are still with the sole purpose hills but enjoy some twisty roads, a few patches of redwoods, etc. Driving along the the deep is also very nice.
Across the bridge, surrounded by the Sacramento River Delta, is a nice relaxing drive. No mountains though. I go through Antioch sometimes to hold hwy 160 up to Sacramento along the river. But you would probably find it way boring.
Here is the plain, factual truth. The largest, superlative 'mountains' (note they are called Mounts, not mountains), contained by the SF BAY Area are Mt. Tam, Mt. Diablo, and Mt. St. Helena. You will not find "true" mountains until the Sierra. Go to Mt. Tam, across the bay from you. It is not a Sierra type mountain, but you can escape near and find a thousand places where you will see not a soul all sunshine if you choose.
Aww, c'mon. Give the bay a unpredictability. You have some of the most the most delicate places right in your own backyard that masses people from adjectives over the world travel to!
Have you been to wine country nonetheless? Napa, Sonoma, Glen Ellen, etc.
How about the the deep? Marin county, Sonoma Coast (Jenner, CA), Bolinas, Point Reyes National Seashore
For a quick go and get away, may I suggest Benicia, CA? Go north bound on 680, and it is just right accross the bridge:

Lastly, try checking out the Santa Cruz mountains. They are truly amazing--check out Castle Rock State Park for some great hiking. It's a bit of a trip (~1.5hrs), but it will give you a different appetite of what you have be seeing...http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/cas...

Of course when you are used to huge majestic mountains similar to the ones in CO after yeah, Mt. Diablo might not compare--try having a different attitude and appreciate CA for its other attributes...
Lastly, consider getting a Bay Area hiking guide, or travel book so that you can enjoy lots ideas of cool places to stop by. Seriously, go to Barnes and Noble and pick one up!
Why would you go off Colorado?
Don't get me wrong, one smaller amount person here is other a good item...but why?

Traffic where you are is horrifying. Can be rather impossible in Denver too. As are adjectives of our metro areas these days.
Really recommend you stop trying to compare-And relish what you have. That is what I did.
