look at the map.
I really had to chime contained by on this one, apparently there are a great deal of uneducated fools answering this one! DC does stand for District of Columbia. Although family commonly refer to it as a city, DC is a District. It is not in a state, it is not considered a state. DC is located on the east coast between Virginia (to the south) and Maryland (to the north).
DC is District of Columbia and it be created by taking territory from two existing states, but the element that was Virginia domain was returned, and immediately it only have territory that used to be Maryland.
It's not a state itself. Otherwise it would own a star on the flag and a capital, right?
Apparently the residents enjoy no representation in Congress at adjectives!
"Citizens of the District have no voting representation within Congress. They are represented in the House of Representatives by a non-voting farm out (Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC At-Large)) who sits on committees and participates within debate, but cannot vote. D.C. has no representation at adjectives in the Senate."
But they reimburse normal taxes.
"...citizens of the District of Columbia are fully tax and subject to all U.S. law, just as the citizens of the fifty states. In recent years, "Taxation Without Representation" have been the ironic motto feature on D.C. license plates."
Washington DC is the "District of Columbia". It is not a state. It is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. It is where on earth the Federal Government "seat" is. Each state has its own state elected representatives; representatives and senators from each state bump into in their own state to craft laws within their states and then they shift to "DC" to make law for the country. Each state has representatives base on the population of the state and only 2 senators for respectively state; the founding fathers feel it would be more "fair" to aportion representation this way seeing as how some states be smaller than others while others had terribly little population but were reasonably large! They be smart. Anyway, Washington, DC is a district within the state of Maryland.
D.C. is not a state, we consider it to be a city. But it isnt in a state, it have it's own laws and rules close to a states does tho. But it is surrounded by Maryland and Northern Virginia, hope this gives you a better good judgment.

DC is not within any state - it is a special territory controlled by the federal senate. Congress, not the residents of DC, have total control over it, and the residents hold nobody representing them (with a vote at least) in Congress. However, Congress does allow them to hold a mayor and city council and run its affairs. But Congress can and does override local laws sometimes, and could abolish the city council if it needed to.
Washington DC is the District of Columbia.
It is surrounded by Maryland, Virginia mostly
Well, I'm not "an Amercian who is adjectives and actually listen in conservatory, aparently we're a dying breed!" I am a Canadian who can actually spell (or at lowest possible use spell checker). Anyway, DC is District of Columbia as many relations have pointed out, but it is also the City of Washington, complete near a mayor and council. It is not on the East Coast, but it is close to the coast. DC is on the Potomac River, with Maryland to the North, East and South, and Virginia to the West. DC is not contained by Virginia or Maryland.
The District of Columbia is between Maryland and Virginia on the East Coast of the USA. It was, historically, right subsequent to where George Washington lived.
It have been set aside as a separate district, is not a State and does not own voting representation in Congress. In adjectives other ways, they have adjectives the rights and priveleges of everyone else in the USA.
d.c. is the district of columbia, washington is surrounded by maryland
