Going on a college road trip to SF, CA...where on earth is as righteous & verbs place to stay while on a budget?

You should try Hotels.com or any of the travel sites. You can probably gain a room at one of the nicer downtown hotels for $100 or so. You can also try to get one in the vicinity the airport. The Hampton Inn is not bad. Depends on where on earth you plan on going to visit. SFSU is on the other side of the City and close to the airport. USF is practical the Haight District and in the middle of the City.
Hint: Look for the ones surrounded by the Financial District if you are coming on for a weekend.
I would say hostel, but I don't know if that would be comfortable for you and your sons.
There are reasonably-priced motels along Lombard contained by the Marina. I particularly close to the Del Sol; it's clean, pretty, and in a roundabout way on Lombard Street. Plus, it's one of the few places with a pool.
