Where to stay contained by San Francisco?

We (27 & 33 F & M) will be flying into San Jose, as it's cheaper and we would like to do some verbs seeing up the coast Santa Cruz, etc on the way. We will be renting a coup¨¦ for some driving... redwoods etc... Where to stay though. I know Union square is central, but parking seem expensive. We would like to stay close to nightlife... suggestions? Looking for cheaper places. We will be in that for 3 days so any other tips would be great!

if you go to San Francisco consequently you should go to the San Francisco zoo the wax museum alcatraz and the golden proceeds bridge.
Although it is ably worth a visit, Santa Cruz is not "on the way" from San Jose to San Francisco. It's in reality a detour of 40-50 minutes. Santa Cruz is *south* of San Jose (Highway 17), whereas San Francisco is *north* of San Jose (U.S. 101 or Interstate 280).

If you want nightlife, you have to stay surrounded by Downtown San Francisco. That's where most of the nightlife is. For nightclub listings, see here:

There's three nightlife related problems next to not staying Downtown:

- You don't want to get caught driving your rental saloon back to the suburbs while drunk. Not a perfect idea.

- There's an OWL Bus surrounded by San Francisco proper:

http://transit.511.org/providers/maps/SF...

However, public transportation to the suburbs shut down at around midnight - 1 AM (and doesn't resume until 4 - 5 AM in the morning).

- Taxis are expensive, so it's not practical to use them to travel long distances.
First of adjectives Santa Cruz is not on the way to SF from San Jose. You would be backtracking, but it would be fun to be in motion to Santa Cruz and take Hwy 1 North to SF. A scenic trip. Go ahead and spend abit more to stay close to Union Square as driving contained by SF can be a drag. I would just suggest a on-line source for a discounted hotel rate. Priceline, Travelocity, etc.
Sorry, cannot help you on this one

If I was you I would try and stay fundamental Yerba Buena Gardens. There are many angelic hotels near at hand (though they are not cheap, but you can find good deals) and nearby is a lot of things to do. It is close to the modern Bloomingdales and Westfields shopping center and there are two HUGE cineplexes right surrounded by the vicinity. The Metreon (which have a plethora of electronic shops, restaurants, and other fun things) is right in that nouns. In addition, this is where on earth you will find plenty of bars and other nice restaurants (Buca di Beppo, Les Jouvins, etc.). And if you're within the mood, or if its your thing, in that is also the SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts) right next to the Metreon.

In incorporation to these benefits, the area practical Yerba Buena Gardens (near Mission Street and 3rd Street) is very close to several primary bus lines AND several subway stations (BART and Muni stops), all confidently within walking distance. Plus its lone a 5 min walk to Union Square, Niketown, Macy's westcoast Flagship stores, Sak's 5th Ave, and, as you would expect, the cable cars.

You can easily lock in BART or Muni to fisherman's wharf and Pier 39 from here (less than 5 mins). So you can see most of the best parts of SF and do all the touristy things that ethnic group do when they come to SF. Some hotels that are very intensely nice near the Yerba Buena Gardens are: Westin St. Regis, Sheraton, Four Seasons, and the Marriot.

Hope this help, have fun!
I tend to stay at The Olympic Hotel, a.k.a. The San Franciscan Hotel. This hotel is one of the cheapest contained by downtown San Francisco, on the right spot. Close to dining, shopping, entertainment, and much more. It is not a fancy place, so don't expect high class service. You grasp to choose a room with private tub or shared bath...preferr you book near private bath. Free continental breakfast. TV channel might not work properly, but hey, most of your time you'd be out sight seeing.

What I approaching about this hotel is contained by the area is located. In the center of everything. The SF Shopping Ctr of late around the corner, Metreon about 5 blocks, Powell BART-MUNI around the corner, Cable Car also around the corner. There's a Carl's Jr. around the corner as economically, if you're not full with the continental breakfast they serve you in that.

I like it. It's fully clad, good price, fitting location, it's good. Oh, there's also a Thai place subsequent to it, in valise you like Thai food. Check Expedia.com for this hotel's rates. They can travel from $55-$75 per night for up to two folks. Here, mapquested, and see where it is located, you can also Google it, see descriptions of it.
