Is near a place to stay contained by New York City explicitly inexpensive (less than $200/night) and contained by a well-mannered location?
And it has to be someplace my 70-year-old, terrifically conservative mother can tolerate. No hostels or dives.

Two or three years ago, you could've found nice places for lower than $200 a night, that weren't dives. Now anything below $200 is just going to be a hole. The average rate for adjectives hotels in the city is in a minute over $300, and that includes the dives and the hotels in the outer boroughs (Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and the Bronx) which are still bit of the city.
Try Jersey City and take the transport, or Secaucus and take the bus.
There aren't any $200 a darkness hotels in NYC that aren't dives or hostels. The average hotel runs $400-500 within Midtown, a bit less surrounded by some of the less desirable areas. NY is a terrifically expensive place to live in or stop by.
You may find something decent and close to $200 contained by North New Jersey or out on Long Island though. Either or those is a relatively quick train ride away from the city. (Within a hour or two)
New York can be a very expensive place, that's for sure. And some would utter that $200.00 a night surrounded by New York, just can't be done, but that's really not true. I know the PARAMOUNT Hotel you can stay a moment ago shy under $200.00 a dark, and a lot of these hotels hold discounts when you book via the internet. Or If that's for a time out of your price range, check on Craigslist.com contained by the NY section, at hand are ads on rental, break rooms? Or Travelzoo.com. Something to look into? But I really think you should check out the Paramount or the BROADWAY PLAZA HOTEL . Both are far from dives.
The Cosmopolitan Hotel within Tribeca is relatively inexpensive. It is near tons of the bus and subway lines. It's right in Manhattan too. Prices run from $129-$159 a dark. The link below will provide you more information. Not a dive, not a hostel and in a apposite safe neighborhood.

That's tough. Less than $200 is going to be a dive contained by Manhattan. You'll have to check any Brooklyn or New Jersey.
If she's super conservative and wants to stay within manhattan, you're going to have to increase your budget.
