I'm going to assume that you are not flying since you are going away so soon. How about Niagara Falls, stay on the Canadian side, it's cooler. Drive down to the Great Smoky Mts. surrounded by Gatlinburg, TN, a cool couple place. What about Atlantic City, NJ or Washington DC.

Come out to Long Island! You can come out East and check out the shoppes in the Hamptons (yes, even within the cold) or stay here on the North Shore and visit some of the wineries. Just drop on the LIRR or drive out if you have a saloon. It'll be romantic and quick.
For skiing, try Hunter Mountain, in the region of 4 hours north of the city.
To just grasp away and relax, try the Bear Mountain Inn on Bear Mountain, about 90 minutes north of the city. It's rates are fine, and the view is wonderful.

Or if you're into antiquing and visit quaint little shops and such, but want to avoid crowds and receive great off-season rates, try going to the Jersey Shore! Hi in attendance! It really would help to know how much money you can spend, but, Florida is a great place to leave. On the east coast they have Universal Studios, Disney world , etc. On the east coast, within is Busch Gardens and the gulf of Mexico-oh is it beautiful! If you are not into that species of thing, afterwards , may I suggest the Keys. They are really laid back and Key West is the most exquisite place in the continental U.S..They enjoy a great time celebrating natural life in broad and you can see the Grand Tortugas from the top of the Days Inn! Also, from just in the order of anywhere, you can take a making a bet cruise. I don't know if this is the kind of time off that you want but it is the farthest item from N.Y. that you can get.
