South Padre Island is just 30 min away and if you want to be in motion to Mexico it is just 20-30 min away. There you can totter around drinking your favorite beer or drink. You find all sorts of merchandise, inexpensive!! Good food, perfect music and lots of drinks. There is also a popular Zoo in Brownsville, a favorite Cathedral within San Juan. McAllen has lots of nite clubs.
I didn't see a indisputable answer to your question. From my experience, it is not a place for a best or nice nouns. I love Texas but Harlingen is just an armpit. No offense if you resembling bird watching or are following the footsteps of Ghandi. I just can`t bear it.
Harlingen, Texas is a nice little town, they don't own many impossible areas there.
