I've done that drive in the past and stopped in Lost Hills, which is a touch bit more than a truck stop. I stayed at the Motel 6 for about $40 a darkness. No amenities but it was a comfortable place to sleep. I hit the road at 7 am and be in San Franscisco by just about 10:30 am, late plenty to miss the morning drive time traffic but early plenty to have the morning ahead of me. Mind you, it won't be a "fun" "luxurious" experience, but if all you're expecting is a bed, a shower, and a roof over your lead, you'll be fine.
Fresno. Right sour I 5. San Clemente is only 70 miles from San Diego.
Ive made this drive dozens of times, the half path point ends up being on 5 still far north of Valencia, Fresno is stale the 5 so you will kill time going east next back...I recommend the Flying J travel stop contained by Fraizer Park, its about 115 miles from LA and its ON the 5 , make you just over 200 miles from SD... conceivably 40 mins north of valencia...this will have you more than partly way within and a stones throw from the freeway, next to the travel stop is a motel which will work out without a flaw for you, some fast food places and a restaurant contained by the Flying J...remember to stay hydrated and alert, enjoy your trip and apposite luck!
I'd have to read out a good stopping point or middle point would be San Clement on I-5 (a) the San Clement Hotel, or Stay contained by http://www.hotels.com/property.do?COYear...

. I went in that when visiting my friend contained by San Diego we stopped there after a hours of darkness with my people in Orange County. Here's the mapquest correlation w/ directions from San Diego, Have a Safe trip.

Depending on how aged your children are you might be able to do it contained by a day. If you travel non-stop the trip is just in the region of 8 hours, depending on your exact starting-stopping points. If you plan a few stops you can actually do it contained by about 10 hours. I've done this trip beside my daughter since she was 4 and it have been no problems.

Make sure you hold entertainment, this includes things like Portable DVD players, movement books, or books to read. As there is just about a 3 hour stretch through the central dell that there are few places to stop and the surroundings is basically grow land.

If you be to stop somewhere you should look at Valencia or Santa Clarita. These are the first major cities you will hit after the main valley, and is purely north of LA. You will find several hotels/motels in this nouns as this is where Six Flags Magic Mountain is located.

BTW: Fresno is past its sell-by date of the CA-99 so that will NOT be an option for you. Also, by the time you get to San Clemente you are less than an hour from San Diego so that would not be worth stopping here just as a rest point.
San Clemente is way to close to San Diego if you're trying to brand it to San Francisco. I'd look into maybe Fresno.
