My son is 4 and we spent a whole daytime at Loose Park, playin and having a picnic second summer.
I don't know how old they are, but you can steal them to Science City at Union Station, there are a quantity of children's museums, a zoo, take them to a Royal's hobby, etc. Some of the suburbs (like Overland Park, Olathe, etc.) are very house centered and you wouldn't have trouble finding family connections friendly places to go around near.
