I inevitability direction from chicago residents?
I live in Chicago and I am trying to start freelancing. I know symbolic design and web design and do abundantly of abstract paintings.
I be thinking of trying to get some business from hotels and restaurants, because I could do menus or painting for them. But how should I go almost doing this? If I call they will probably lately hang up, if I in actual fact go contained by and show them my portfolio I feel approaching they would also just dismiss me right away?
Would it be odd to mail them a memorandum talking going on for what I can do and maybe offering them a discount?

I would suggest donating some of your services. How going on for starting with diverse churches. There are plenty of large/small churches that can use your services. Then try schools. There may be some local school private/public that can use your services. Word of mouth is the best way to start your freelancing.
Find the website of the hotels you are interested and the acquire the names of the owner/operator/manager etc. Send them your pitch. I know of one man who took picture of the hotels walls surrounded by an Hawaiian hotel and had some of his pictures photoshopped on the wall and it looked nice. He be ale to sell some of them.
You should also pass them links to websties you have designed etc.
Also donate your work to places so it will bring back seen.
