Park Slope surrounded by Brooklyn. Plenty of young lawyer there and the rent is nowhere practical as much as in Mahattan. If you want Manhattan, you could catch a small one-bedroom apartment in the Chelsea, while surrounded by Park Slope you could get a big three-bedroom apartment. Seventh Avenue contained by Park Slope is very trendy next to restaurants, fashion, and the arts.
There are plenty of place to live in New York City. Check the links below, you might be lucky to find an apartment for smaller amount than $3,000.
Good luck and good luck on your adjectives career.

Depends on the species of environment you want
West Village - Bohemian College Town
Soho - Eurotrash
Upper East Side - If you're past 40 the place to budge
Upper West Side - Great area w/ lots of restaurants & bar - fairly mixed
Lower East Side - Really Bohemian
East Side - Pretty commune
Downtown - Ok if you if you're working (a) Calderwell or Sullivan & Cromwell
Park Slope (Brooklyn) Great neighbourhood but more of a familial environment, not too much "fun"
Harlem - if you're into up and coming, it's up and upcoming
Upper West Side is a great place to live. Central Park is very close and nearby is a lot of group in resaturants within people. It is also a severely safe place.
