One thing I did at hand was hold a river boat tour that showed all the buildings from hose down level. It be really cool. There are some good museums in attendance too (supposedly), but I only go to the aquarium. There's also some famous pier that you could call in too.
Sears Tower, Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier, Museum of Science & Industry, Aquarium (Awesome), Brookfield or Lincoln Park Zoo. Hit the downtown bar & clubs.
Navy Pier
If shopping, State Street, Magnificent Mile & Water Tower
Sears Tower
lincoln Park Zoo
the Beach
United Center
Chinatown
Pilsen ~ Mexican Fine Arts Museum
Watch the Blue Man Group
Field Museum
Shedd Aquariam
Botanic Garden
Museum of Contemporary Art
Museum of Science & Industry
Chicago History Museaum
Not to mention the sports: Bulls, Cubs, White Sox, etc.
not sure if still going on/or where it held but I hear about the Broadway Color Purple
The Museum of Science and Industry is a must. There is a complete WW2 German submarine in the underground store. Something you will never forget.
That famous pier is call "Navy Pier", and it's very nice. You can also amble along the pier and take your choice of several different boat rides across the lake beside varying prices. You can either be in motion for just a boat ride, or you can move about on a boat ride with dinner on the "Spirit of Chicago." There is also a ferris tiller that the ride lasts 7 minutes, and when you are at the top, you can see the Chicago skyline (it is best if you jump at night, because it is definitely beautiful). The best place to see the entire skyline from the ground is at the Adler Planetarium (night time is best, because everything sparkles). They also have fireworks at 10:30 p.m. on Wed. & Sat. Another suitable place to go is any Lincoln Park Zoo (which is free) or Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, IL, but in attendance you have to repay separately for everything (train ride, admission, dolphin show, etc.) At Navy Pier, they also own trolleys, either free or paying , that are closely of fun to ride on, and the drivers do talking tours of downtown. If you can stand height, another great place to go is to the Sears Tower, but chew gum contained by the elevator while you are going up so that your ears won't clog up (it goes up awfully high).
Also, this probably stands the same where on earth ever you go, but if you bring a saloon, lock all the doors, and do not walk out anything in verbs that someone might want to steal. Also be careful to maintain a close watch on your purse/wallet while walking around. If you park where on earth there is a meter, you also own to make sure you put ample money in nearby for your time, because they will nab you with a ticket as soon as the meter expires.
The Museum of Science & Industry, while massively interesting, is not really downtown, it's at 5700 Lake Shore Dr., which is quite a distance from downtown.
There are also some family who will try to give you a bs story roughly their car running out of gas, one of their relatives is sick, they inevitability bus or train fare, etc. Don't fall for any of this, only keep walking.
stir to Navy Pier and also walk down the Mag Mile (Michigan Avenue).
