I own visited Chicago every year for times past 50 years (parents are visiting in attendance now from FL) and if you can afford it, I would notably suggest staying closer to downtown and Michigan Ave. 60611 zip code. From here, you can walk to lately about everything you will want to see. Field Museum, Art Institute, shopping. Chicago is a fantastic city. Hotels are to some extent expensive though. Check Priceline or Expedia. One of my favorites is the Marriott Fairfield Inn (free breakfast), a couple blocks east of Michigan Ave (the Magnificent Mile). Also, if you are flying, take the train into the City from the airport. You'll pick up nearly $100. There are lots of stops downtown and one will likely be practical your hotel. The airport shuttle and cabs have gotten outrageously expensive. Don't forget to shift to Gino's East for real Chicago pizza--they are vertebrae in their ancient spot on Superior and if you tell your concierge, you can avoid the hang around. The Grand Luxe on Michigan is good for dinner.
You picked a really great neighborhood for your hotel. The resting place is really small and practically deserted. There are a ton of clubs and bars contained by the area as resourcefully as shopping, restaurants, theaters, night clubs. Go do the Cubs entry and also check out Millennium Park which is our newest park beside really awesome art exhibits and it's all free. Just stray around downtown and you'll stumble across a ton of shops, Buckingham Fountain, Sears Tower, City Hall, Navy Pier, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium. The nice thing nearly coming to Chicago is that our public transportation system is so great you will not need a hackney cab - we have tons of trains and buses that run adjectives night. Have fun.
Chicago isn't all bleak. Only the South Side really... I don't know which part explicitly, it sounds a bit northern (I have relatives contained by a 60631 area code, they live within a safe neighborhood within Northwest Chicago). If it's the North side, don't worry too much. If it's more South side, I'd be a moment or two more afraid.
Since you were mentioning a Cubs activity I think you'll be fine... But you might not want to bring my word on it, try researching a bit more.
Try Google image probing it and see where it is.
