Answers:
by the time you pay taxes and $18,000 per year surrounded by rents, it will leave you extremely little for entertainment and food. Taxes will run about $15,000 per year so between taxes and rent $33,000 it with the sole purpose leave 24,000 to live on. Don't forget you own insurance, transportation, food, utilities to name of late a few.
Congratulations! It is a fitting salary to start outta college and it will be plenty if you know how to spend it. A $1500 for an apartment is really good and by Columbia Univ is a pretty correct area. Make sure not to over spend specially at darkness time. A cocktail in a lounge or a club will cost you $14 plus $1 tip so it is expensive. You should delight in your life and try to recover a bit every month or so...
57k is more than what many working class race make contained by NYC after many years of work, so i would never voice that i had a rock-hard time making it here.
columbia is a great neighborhood, but i would have considered living contained by an outer borough for up to 1/3 less.
as long as you know how to govern your money, shop critically, cook and entertain okay at home, you should do just fine.
i grain bad for the younger citizens i see who move here and go out every hours of darkness and then complain that they're broke.
You're ok.
