Where should I rent an apartment contained by NYC?
I'm wanting somewhere safe, all the same affordable. I know the cost of living there is extreme, so I'm simply asking which areas I can look contained by that aren't as bad as Manhattan, but are also secure for myself and my daughter. Any suggestions?

If you still want to remain in the city, may I suggest living out side Manhattan. There should be affordable apartments surrounded by Astoria and Forest Hills, Queens. Also Sunnyside, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Kew Garden Hills, all surrounded by Queens. From these area, you'll own a 30 to 40 minutes subway ride to Manhattan.

In the Bronx, look at Parkchester
In Brooklyn, try Marine Park, Flatbush, and Sheepshead Bay. Of these Flatbush has the easiest trip to Manhattan, if you hold a daily commute, and may be the most minuscule expensive.
Queens--look at any of the communities along the #7 IRT, such as Astoria, Sunnyside, Corona. You could also look at Yellowstone, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills, although I personally don't similar to these.
Staten Island--Grymes Hill and Silver Lake.
For apartment listings, the NYTimes and Craigslist, but outside Manhattan and Brooklyn, Newsday for Queens and silive.com for Staten Island.
In Brooklyn, Lefferts Garden, and Cobble Hill are safe neighborhoods, as powerfully as a few areas around Prospect Park. For more affordable housing while remaining in Manhattan, look in recent times above the Upper East Side around the border of Spanish Harlem (I know this is safe because I enjoy lived here), or to the East in Yorkville. Astoria and other parts of Queens are not detrimental, but you really have to contribute yourself sometime to explore, because neighborhoods change from block to block. Also, on the Upper West side Washington Heights is a awfully nice area. Also, my upright friend has just this minute moved to Hoboken, NJ, which is calmer and the commute surrounded by to Midtown is convenient. If you are commuting I would recomend living near the 6 (4,5 express) train or the L train as they are the most reliable... but logically it all depends on where on earth you need to progress to from home. These are safe affordable places where on earth some of my friends and I are living.

So you are looking for a place outside of Manhattan? I would suggest trying to find something in Westchester County (Mamaroneck, Rye, Harrison, Port Chester - PC isn't the safest place but it's not too dreadful, White Plains, ect). They are all almost 35-40 minutes away from the city and not that expensive.
I currently live in Greenwhich, Ct (literally 2 minutes away from NY) i a 4 bedfroom for 3400. Before I lived surrounded by Mamaroneck, a 3 bedroom for 1800.
If you really want safe, I would suggest Rye. It's a huge ethnic group town.
Safe AND affordable... south Brooklyn.. Bensonhurst/Gravesend/Sheepshead Bay area.. it's past the worst, but affordable because it takes almost an hour to find into the city by train, and if you drive the most direct routes into the city and core parts of Brooklyn are heavily congested local through streets (no expressways).
Maspeth Queens is faint, nice area. It is 40 - 50 minutes on mass transit. Rents come and go based on condition of apartment (newer = more expensive). Many elder houses are 2 family next to owners occupying as economically. This is a good substitute as its not as commercial as an apartment building. Rent for 2 bedroom is between $1,400 - $2,000/month.
