No one I know tries to hide their elocution. I am guessing you try and hide yours. You preserve asking this question. If anyone is making fun of your elocution I am guessing it has something to do near your attitude towards people. You appear to ruminate you are much better than the rest of the world.
You also may want to consult a map. Texas is considered Southwestern US, not southern US.

I be born and raised here and do sense that Houstonians, Dallasites and Austin residents do not have as strong as an Texas drawl as smaller east and west Texas town residents do. I don't reflect we try to hide our Texas draw. We are freshly more culturally raised around so various different accents that ours do not stand out as strong as smaller town Texans. I am proud to be an Texan and would never try to squirrel away my Texas Pride.

How many ancestors have you met who be born here? Maybe this is more prevalent in black parts of town? Admittedly, most folks I know are white transplants, but the natives don't hide from view their accents, and the transplants own picked up the regional accent and euphamisms. My closest friend come here from Chicago. You'd never know by listening to him. I come here as a kid, so you wouldn't hear it from me either?
Have you heard the evening word lately in the south. They nouns uneducated. Personally as a southerner I am flushed for them to go on TV and speak approaching they didn't pass the 3rd level.
Most of my family have a southern drawl. I got lucky and don't hold much of one. But most of that lack of diction is from trying my best not to sound resembling that.
beacause for years, the south has be viewed as the most unapprised region of the US... and it is.
Because a "southern Accent" usually finances poor English.
