Great (preferably free/cheap) things to do in/around Chicago?
Looking to do as much as possible in impulsive June. If you have any cheap or free thinking, that'd be awesome!
Thanks in credit!
Answers:
Check out the Chicago Tribune building - it has parts of stone deep-seated into it from all over the world. (approx 200 N Michigan)
Check out "the bean" contained by Millennium Park - (about 200 S Michigan)
Check the free "concerts in the park" schedule.
There are TONS of free things to do within Chicago. Free days at the museums (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Institue of Chicago). A free zoon (Lincoln Park Zoo). Hanging out at Millennium Park. Window shopping on State Street or Michigan Ave. Biking along the lakefront (there are bike rental spots along the path, including across Lake Shore Drive from Buckingham Fountain). Cheap comedy shows at iO Theater, the Annoyance Theater, the Playground Theaters (from $5 to $10...For example this improv show at the Apollo Theater is eight bucks!). Free concert surrounded by the afternoons at the Chicago Cultural Center downtown. Free or cheap open mike poetry at several places (The big Slam at the Green Mill Lounge is $7). Live music at several venue that either free or cost smaller number than $15 (Again, the Green Mill has live jazz on consistent nights for smaller quantity than $10). And You can download a free Chicago audio tour on your iPod and conduct your own sightseeing tour. (http://www.downloadchicagotours.com/_
And since you're coming in June, nearby are bound to be a few street fairs going on that are any free or have a low access price (about $5) where you can buy food and hear live band for free.
Your best move would be to pick up a copy of Time Out Chicago magazine the week you get here. They enumerate almost everything going on in the city that week and include the prices, including free events (marked near FREE in big red letters).
Like I said, Chicago doesn't hold to be expensive
Hmm, that's tough just because it seem like no issue how many times I vote to my boyfriend, "We need to do inexpensive things this weekend!" we other spend too much ... Chicago is an expensive city.
But usually by June the streets festivals are contained by full swing. Every neighborhood seems to hold one at some point, and it's usually only more or less $5-$8 to get contained by, and the food is usually pretty inexpensive. I would avoid the Taste of Chicago like the plague though. Over-priced and over-crowded.
Navy Pier is fun. The ferris pedals is only $6 a personality, and you get a great vista of the city. They also have some inexpensive restaurants here where you can sit outside on the portico and take within the water view.
There's also walks and such along the beach on Lakeshore Drive. That's one of my favorite things to do in the summer here.
There's also a book call the Cheap Bastard's Guide to Chicago. Go to your local bookstore and jot down some resume.
Hope this helps.
I love just walking up and down Lake Michigan.
