It be used as a promotion for the New York Tourism Board in the 1970's and stuck ever since.
There's a quantity of different theories. But the one most accepted (and the one I approaching, particularly because I'm a musician) is this one. Jazz artists within the 20's and 30's played alot of different places and amoung the musicians they were call the places they played, apples. New York was THE place to play jazz at the time. If you made it here, you really did something. Therefore, they called it the BIG apple.
