That it is an older phenomenon than even the word yuppie. I mull over people move to the city contained by hope of better job prospects not 'just to be cool'. I have a feeling they should go for it, fashion their cash and use the city for what they can whilst they're in attendance. Then when they're older they can spend that money, possibly back within 'nowheresville' or somewhere else they'd like to walk to get weak and grey. ...sounds an alright plan to me. Why'd it annoy you unless you weren't making the most of what you've got?

I don't have a sneaking suspicion that they do that to be cool. If they wanted to be cool, they'd stay surrounded by New York.
Many leave because it's remarkably expensive to live in NY. Retired family, for example, get like amount of Social Security no matter where on earth they choose to live. Many choose to live where that money will shift farther.
