Its probably the best place in town to live in need a car, as in that is so much variety within walking distance. It has a reputation as a gay neighborhood, and it is orient that way but its becoming more and more of a mixed place. There are plenty of family with immature kids, just move about in "The Lily Pad Store" a children's toy store within if you need to see. Hillcrest is close to Balboa Park, have good bookstores, great food of adjectives types, interesting architecture...
Fun place yes, tons of places to eat, but a protected place? With it near Balboa Park, nightlife, and downtown it's a incredibly busy area. Best bet is to tramp. There were a bunch of dislike intensely crime issues going on last year although in that are usually people walking around at adjectives hours, but parking is a major hassle.
The more you progress away from where the shops are, the nicer and quieter the neighborhoods attain. Few of the places that are nice are affordable to rent or own.
I feel resembling it lost its "artsy" vibe to other areas around SD. South Park is up and coming, North Park and Kensington are similar and not as busy.
Good nouns! More expensive than many other parts of town. Very diverse and have a nice community feel to it. Great darkness life and broad range of places to drink.
it's contained by a very federal part of San Diego. There are profusely of good restaurants and disorganized artsy fartsy type places to buy clothes and vintage furniture etc. You can live in a terrifically nice area for deeply of $$$ or in a more run-down subdivision of hillcrest for something more affordable. It is also home to a lot of San Diego's gay community.
As a original San Diegan, I would not live there. I occasionally turn there for lunch or dinner or something, but greatly of the area is too run-down and not really that nontoxic for a single girl to live alone in compared to other areas of town. There are abundantly of homeless there too.
If your looking for that scene but want something more affordable and safer, i would check out parts of North Park.
Funny you should ask that, I in recent times read in the report that Hillcrest is one of the best places to live. Read this: http://www.planning.org/greatplaces/neig...
hillcrest san diego is an urban lifestyle "hip" fun place to live mostly architectual type apartments it seems. avant garde movie acting, cafes, restaurants & market. plenty of nice boutique type shops. location is adjacent to san diego downtown. not plentiful little kids & a large gay population.seem pretty safe as places dance...farmer's mkt on weekends
I would say that it's not a definite "family" place to live...seems resembling everyone there is single and free. Not much Little League or Girl Scouts going on.
However, if you approaching walking to great restaurants and living in the city, you'll love it.
