The Lexington Green surrounded by Lexington... they have lot's of cool things nearby. Or Mystic SeaPort.. *you would have to hold the 4 year olds hand* it is freshly a few hour drive from MA. it is in Conneticut. but it is a great deal of fun. or one of those places that re-in-act the Revolutionary war battle... Duck Tours would be my number one thing to do beside a 4 year old.
In Boston you can go for free to the USS constitution. You can lift the T to nearby Sommervile and drop by the museum of science which dousnt cost too much and you spend an entire day in attendance if you wanted to check everything out.

Boston, etc. contained by the fall is especially fun for kids. There are the usual places to turn like the park contained by the Boston Commons, Children's Museum, New England Aquarium, Franklin Park Zoo all accessible by public transportation and/or ample parking. There are also other seasonal happenings you can do like shift to the Annual Beacon Hill trick-or-treat extravaganza on Halloween night. It's free and the kids and adults will be treated to extravagant decorations and a ton of candy. Look for pick fairs within other areas like Newton and Natick.

In Harvard Square they enjoy a Curios George goes to Wordsworth (bookstore) that is to say really fun for the little ones. The Boston aquarium is fun to go to. I'm not sure if a 4 Year hoary would appreciate the science museum but you can be the judge of that. Also the Bston Duck Tours are fun I judge you can buy tickets at the science muesem but i'm not sure. Buy a travel book and it will have a for kids cubicle and it will give you even more thinking!

Soooooooooooo much for a child to do in Boston, loads of parks, museums, boat adventures, basically walking along the river, canoes.swan boats down town! man, I love the museum of science, go up north on the commuter railing to Salem, Rockport... again more of the same honourable stuff.
Newton / water town / waltham enjoy great parks for riding bikes, and ball field, ect...
take a wander in any direction, and you'll find something to do.
