Well, you're on the right track as Crystal Beach has NO nice hotels. Just a couple of dumpy motels.
Now you do know you will enjoy to cross over on the ferry from Galveston to go and get to Crystal Beach, right?
My all time favorite for meaning and cleanliness is the Commodore on the Seawall. Great views of the hose from each room and a capably maintained small pool.
The nicer hotels are pricey but enjoy more amenities and service. Among them is the San Luis Resort and Conference Center, Moody Gardens, and The Flagship (built over the water). Also well represented are the chains Hilton, Holiday Inn, Days Inn. You can even stay at a Bed and Breakfast on a small boat by the tallship Ellissa.
There are various motels and condos that rent by the night. The Sandpiper is elder but is on the beach. Casey's by the Sea and the Casa del Mar are some others on the Seawall.
If you want to spend your time surrounded by Crystal Beach, look into renting a beach house for the weekend. Often is purely as cheap as staying at a hotel. Contact Swede's Realty, Beach or Bay Realty, Buster Martin Realty or Cobb's Realty here in Crystal Beach. Cobb's handle more of the upscale rentals but can be pricey.

The Hotel Galvez is top serrate. Recently (in the past 4 years) remodeled, the hotel have a spa and fabulous breakfast buffet.

3rd choice - Moody Gardens Hotel - beautiful viewpoint - away from the hub bub of the Seawall, but still easy access.
