I mean, we aint equal city we were 15 years ago. Sure, crime is down, but what made New York inimitable is quickly dissappearing.

Lex,
I think you might enjoy answered the question when someone else brought this up only just, regarding Times Square. So to that, I'll repost my answer from that interrogate...
"The "spirit" that has seem to lack here within NYC comes from the fact that the city have become SO overpriced in language of housing, that a lot of society that have be native here are moving out since they cannot afford living here. And next to that, you have those coming from far away moving surrounded by.
Granted, I don't miss the thug Times Square days of the 70's to early 90's, but next to how Times Square is nowadays, the local aspect have been totally lost."
But I gotta enunciate, Harry K nailed it even harder.
These question keep popping up. Yes NYC have lost a lot of life. A previous poster to a similar question hit the bullseye. NYC lost it's underground. It's soul have died. Corporate Chains took over.
What I don't understand is why anybody would want to spend the money needed to look in NYC to day and turn to Times Square. The typical times square visit is to a Wax Museum that holds no redeeming cultural expediency, go to a cuff Toy Or Music store to purchase something than can be purchased anywhere else in the world, and next go to the Olive Garden or Bubba Gump Shrimp Co for dinner. None of those events has anything NYC going on for it.
NYC in its current state will never produce another:
Martin Scorcese
Afrika Bambaataa
Joseph "Biggie Grand" Saddler
Jean-Michel Basquiat
The Ramones
Lou Reed
Jim Carroll
Edit:
All great culture (whether music, art, food, writing, etc.) is bred from poverty and strife. The distinctive thing in the region of NYC was through the decades NYC be a melting pot of different cultures living contained by poverty and strife. NYC today is a buch of southerners and midwesterns trying to "make it" and a bunch of Eurotrash, Asiatrash and any other rich trash. The prehistoric struggling immigrant populations (whether, Italian, Irish, Greek, Hatian, Dominican's, Jamaican, etc. are being marginalized). Who know maybe the subsequent hotbed of culture will be from Irvington, NJ, Union, NJ, Uniondale, NY or Hempstead, NY, but it won't be from Manhattan, that's for sure.
