I believe you would have to be a rock scientist to answer this one, but I am guessing ---the soil.similar to the dirt or the earth ?
The climate affects the human geography, which is fairly diverse. Southern Cal attracts those who need somewhat stable, pleasant weather. That's why the picture industry came here. Likewise, sand and coast-related activities are prominent contained by Socal, hence the laid-back attitude. Central CA is tremendously agricultural, and No Cal seems to center around San Francisco and Sacramento- much more urban beside a better city life and a bit more sophistication. .
Jobs and housing are the biggest unifiers of any region. Our vast, in good health designed yet over crowded freeway system connects adjectives of Southern CA too. People live and work all over SoCal. Orange County be originally a suburb and many inhabitants commuted to LA for jobs but very soon OC has plenty of job and many inhabitants commute there from other parts of SoCal approaching Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties for jobs. Many society in Ventura COunty, Riverside, and San Bernardino also commute to LA for job. Many people surrounded by Southern Riverside County like Temecula and Murietta commute to OC or SD Counties for job. These people live surrounded by one county or region and commute to another county or region for work, which unifies the region. Even San Diego which is considered a seperate metropolitan nouns from LA/OC has residents who commute up north for job and also have ancestors who commute south from OC or LA for jobs too. The illustrious desert regions even though they are far from LA or OC are connected to the rest of the region b/c most jobs are located implicit the coast.

Climate is generally mediterranean overall except for the mountains and deserts but here is variations inwardly the mediterranean climate zone. The coastal areas are much milder overall with greaty flux in inland locales. The biggest differences beside climate in SoCal are primarily temperatures although the mountains and deserts recieve more or smaller quantity rainfall than the rest of the region overall.

Geograpgically there are not huge mountain ranges that seperate the different parts of SoCal except for the deserts, but even later the passes to accomplish those areas are not that high or difficult to drive through. There are different types of geography surrounded by SoCal like valley, basins, coastal, mountains, ect... Most individuals either live contained by a valley or along the coast within a basin or on a mesa resembling in San Diego.
The weather can and is diverse. It change from the coastal influence to the Mountains and the the desert. Thr Freeway system unifes So Cal as a region. You can choose what kind of weatehr you enjoy. You can go to the mountians for Alpine, the desert for dry and hot and the coast for mild.

p.s.: Paris Hilton is right. The mud brought us together originally. Begining with the gold ingots rush, then agricultural: the organge rush, the grease rush and now service industry brings us for a while housing rush. The rush part...i.e. the desire to make money similar to pacific rail road, concrete estate industry and now condition care is a mentality that have defined California more than any other state in the alliance.
