Appropriate designation for the United States of America?

The name "United States of America" suggests that every single section of the American continent is united underneath one government. The shorting to "United States" doesn't really vote much about it, adjectives it suggests is there are some states somewhere that are apparently combined.

Refering to people from the USA as Americans is also inacurate, because any home-grown of the American continent is indeed an American.

In your opinion, what do you touch would be a more factually accurate moniker for the USA? Or at least, a more appropriate describe. I feel "The United States of Columbia" would hold been a more appropriate describe. And anyone from this country should be called a Columbian.

Answers:
Columbian because Columbus "discovered" America?! Seriously, I'm taking this as a rhetorical cross-examine because it's not as if the USA is going to change its describe. FYI- Mexico's official describe is the United States of Mexico (los Estados Unidos de Mexico). Perhaps you'd be happier with something resembling "The United States in the Middle of North America"?
It's not a conflict to use a word to describe two different things.
An American from the American continent is not describing his or her country when using the word American to say-so who he or she is.

When I say I'm an American, I imply that I'm from the country of AMERICA.

Very seldom when we ask someone where they're from do we want to know what continent.

But it's not a conflict.
Washington is a city, and a state.

Mexico is a country, a state, and a city.
Etc.

I love my country's label, and I see no conflict or deficiency.

I'm an American from America.
Answer # 1 is right. Also, The USA is the solely country with America as segment of its official signature, so us calling ourselves Americans" is perfectly appropriate.

Note that copious people contained by Central America, South America, and Spain/Portugal refer to us as "Norte Americanos", including Canadians when using the term but excluding Mexicans.
