Going into Mexico at San Diego border...will I?

be able to nick advantage of our dollar's buying power?

Or is it too close to our border?

One direction for you, maybe two. First, do not drive your vehicle across the border unless you know where and what you are doing. You must purchase Mexican driving insurance even if you enjoy insurance in the states. Also rental cars are not covered. The best item is to park on the US side of the border and take the Mexican black cab. If you plan go further down such as Rosarito, buy insurance resembling I said and stick to the toll roads (looks similar to US freeways, except not free).

As far as buying power goes, you get hold of what you pay for. To catch a good deal, you really hold to know what you are doing. Also you always hold to bargain because they expect you to do so. I in recent times say "es muy caro" and they usually hand over me a better deal. But most vendor near the border speak at smallest some English but they speak less as you stir further south. BTW, they take dollars so don't even bother varying your currency. Also if someone says you pay cheque, you pay. (The fees are nominal so you don't be aware of like you are individual ripped off.)
Advise: Don't go alone into Tijuana.
The prices are lower the further away from the border you procure, but you can still get abundantly of things cheaper than in the US especially if you are predisposed haggle and pay surrounded by dollars. Also look for places that less touristy they are smaller number likely to hold advantage and knowing Spanish is a uncompromising plus. Where the weak dollar comes surrounded by play most though is when you change dollars into pesos or the other bearing around.
You can step to several duty free shops on this side of the border and just bring it final with you across the border. If you are driving I would park on this side of the border and not drive into Mexico. I step to TJ about once a month to shop for gifts, perfume, booze is adjectives far cheaper than here. A good route to visit Mexico is to ride the San Diego trolley down here. It takes something like 35 mins. from downtown and it let's you off right at the border and duty free stores. Have fun and be nontoxic. And really, don't drink the water or anything beside ice or you will regret it.
