If you want somewhere relatively cheap and centrally located, you can stay at Hotel Pennsylvania. It's right within Midtown, on the west side. Another choice would be the Hilton Garden Inn, also in midtown west, but a bit farther uptown.
There are other "hostel" type places you can stay at, but various of these have shared bathrooms, so you will lose some privacy.
Remember that within really are no "cheap" hotels in New York. It's similar to Rome, it can be an expensive city. But there are ways to salvage money if you know where to look.
