Does anyone know how many square blocks are contained by New York City? Average price of parking in a New York City garage? What is [usually] the fine for parking within front of a hydrant? Sources?

Better to park contained by a garage. Usually the farther from Midtown, the cheaper it is.
You park in front of a hydrant, they'll tow you. That is an experience I would'nt option on my worst enemy.

Parking garages run on horly rates here, most enjoy early bird or behind time night specials; also if within is a major attraction close at hand the garage they may work something out so that the patrons of the attraction get a discount ( the Met, Broadway shows, etc). It vary from garage to garage. Also, the fine for parking in front of a hydrant is possibly getting your vehicle towed, which adds up to a ticket somewhere within the one hundred range, plus towing fees, plus impound fees, so you're possibly looking at upwards of $500.
