Definintely plan to go to the National Zoo. It is in reality free to get into, you lately have to earnings for parking or the subway ride to it. The Smithsonian Museums are great, but you may want to browse them on the web and see which ones will interest your son more. Take a time and walk aroung the monuments and such, that's other cool.
There is the National Zoo. There are also a multitude of museums adjectives connected with the Smithsonian Museum. There is the museum of Natural History (has a spectacular dinosaur skeleton display), the Air and Space Museum, even a Spy Museum (the International Spy Museum). One that is to say particularly geared towards children is the Discovery Creek Children's Museum. But at hand are many others as ably. The Discovery Theater is a theater with music and shows geared towards kids and family. There are also boat rides and boat tours.

In addition to what the previous poster mentioned, National Archives where on earth the Declaration of independence and the Constitution and Bill or Rights are housed (among other documents - if your son is outmoded enough, if he watches the movie National Treasure, he might acquire a thrill of seeing the real thing). National Geographic museum, See a baseball activity at the brand new Nationals Stadium, Take a boat ride between Washington Harbor within Georgetown and Alexandria, spend timein Old Town Alexandria. George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. Tyson's Corner Mall if you must go shopping. Stroll the National shopping precinct and visit the monuments, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial. Arlington national Cemetary. Take a ride out a moment or two to Manassas to the Civil War Battlefield - lots of hiking available. National Park for the performing arts at Wolftrap (check their website for performances while you will be here). Kennedy Center (daily free performances at the millenium stage). Six Flags amusement park... Take your pick, lots of stuff to do. Try to take public transportation surrounded by the city itself. Traffic and parking is always a headache.
