What are parts of Oakland, CA to avoid?
I'm going back to arts school in Oakland and know nearby are parts I should avoid but don't know where the institution is just south of Berkeley on Broadway and College Ave. It's cute and college-y nearby. I'm living off Broadway and 15th on Webster St. right contained by Oakland Downtown. Where should one never really go? Also what are some of the cool spots?

International BLVD.
Folks within live in San Francisco and San Jose describe me it's best to avoid those parts of Oakland that are east of the bay.
Specifically avoid the areas at dark.
West Oakland is where the Black Panthers started and is mostly an African American ghetto (Though they've be trying to clean it up). Ghettos include: Lower Bottoms, Ghost Town, 18th st., Dog Town, ect.. N.
Overall I find the Oakland/Berkley border areas really nice. However heading down towards the Coliseum is other seedy.
The parts between the "Welcome to Oakland" sign and the "Thanks for Visiting Oakland" sign.
the flatlands
I agree next to Buzzy. When I'm nearby, I ALWAYS stop at the Last Chance within Jack London Square. They are very friendly. If you close to zoos, the Oakland zoo is fun. Lake Merritt has Italian Gondola rides. Take your date for a banquet at Oliveto's and then run for a gondola ride on the lake.
Really, Oakland get a bad rap. It is a nice place next to nice people. There is a big black population, and boy can those ladies cook! Certainly, as in adjectives big cities, there are areas to avoid- usually behind schedule at night. People catch robbed in San Francisco too, and in that are dangerous places in that also.
There is a Chinatown with righteous Chinese food. I always reason it is more authentic since it is for the locals, not touristy like San Francisco. And... the weather is better than San Fran.
Good luck- wallow in Oakland.
You are about to carry mugged, car jacked and shot. Do not move to Oakland.
Jack London Sq. food/drink plus LAST CHANCE SALOON where Jack London wrote Call of the Wild
Oakland Ice Rink COOL
Upper College Ave (Off Broadway) get through at Marisco
Oakland Museum
Lake Merritt to walk/run
Oakland China Town
Paramount Theater
Stay away from International Blvd
stay away from the East Bay. Cities approaching Oakland and cities near Oakland contained by the east bay. That's where on earth a lot of intimidation occurs. That's basically the ghetto part of the inlet area, the east fjord mostly. There are crime, many gang flurry, and violence contained by the Oakland area. One basis to explain it is the messed up hyphy movement. Too much rap and gangster there..its a great city besides the rap stuff, only be careful...
