las vegas was originally a railway stop between LA and Salt Lake city. The railway men moved their family there after a while and a small settlement developed close where the Fremont Street experience in a minute stands. The town wilted in the desert sun until the building of the just round the corner Hover Dam in the precipitate 1930s and lifting of the gambling veto brought thousands of eager empire into las vegas.
The first hotel on the Strip (El Rancho) opened contained by 1941, closely followed in 1942 by the Hotel Last Frontier approx 1 mile south. Bugsy Siegel open his Flamingo hotel in 1946 and after his annihilation a mass of mob owned hotels (Desert Inn, Dunes, Stardust, Sands etc) opened on the Strip.
To answer your give somebody the third degree was Las Vegas pre-planned? I would read out no. Las Vegas' development owes a large amount to the railway, legalisation of gambling, the building of the hoover bank and the mob, not some pre-planning by city engineers in high-rises somewhere within LA or new york.
Not preplanned but nearby are some large preplanned developements going up approaching Alliante in North Las Vegas. If they preplanned this city they did an awful work. The railroad goes through the center and divides the city. Just try to achieve from one side of the track to the other. Very few over or under pass. You would be amazed how streets just lapse and then on the other side of the track .. within they are but you can't get to them. Bridges are extremely much needed here.
