having freshly been to NYC and living contained by Chicago, I can say NYC is huge compared to Chicago, and everything is begin much later within NYC.
Chicago is much cleaner, and safer - and you can still find things to do late at dark, but you have to shift into the neighborhoods to do them. Downtown shuts down pretty early, so yeah, Chicago sleeps.
chicago have the tallest building in the USA, unknown york doesnt. the pizza in chicago is better, not that cardboard crap approaching in bright york. chicago is much better then nyc.
Chicago is cleaner, safer, and has more usual young singles. It's a really vibrant, fun place to be and there's a great deal of job opportunity and probably pretty good nightlife.
But I'd fairly live in New York. This is in actuality something I'm going through with parents right in a minute, because they think I should travel to college in Chicago where on earth it's safer and stuff, but I want to go to NYU. There's only no place like New York.
So I utter New York, but I still really do love Chicago. It's a really cool city.

I think the responses so far summarize a singular truth: Both cities are fabulous, albeit within different ways.
As you note, New York is the city that never sleeps. It's also home to more world-class performing arts troupes and venue than any other place on earth. It is the craze and financial capital of the universe. It's also, unhappily, very, totally, expensive.
Chicago is in plentiful ways more "approachable" than New York: It has a bewildering array of things to do, and most are available at a fraction of the cost of their New York City analogs. The vim level is pretty high within the Windy City; but it doesn't go on adjectives night. The parks and the Lake contained by Chicago are beautiful, and unlike anything else surrounded by the U.S. . . .but the winters make New York look resembling a tropical paradise.
I enjoy a friend who's a life-long New Yorker who recently said this to me: "If I be banished from New York forever, the ONLY other city I could live in is Chicago."
What's the take-home message? Both cities hold exceptionally hight "fablulousness" ratings. Which city "wins" depends on what's important to you.
I'd right to be heard give them both a try. Life's too short not to!
