For travel within the city, you can acquire day, weekend, week, etc. pass for CTA (Chicago Transit Authority). There's an el that goes around "the Loop" . You can contact them, or I know they're available at Jewel Food Stores (everywhere here).

If you're looking for breakfast, head over to Lou Mitchell's (565 W. Jackson). It's a pretty illustrious place as far as downtown diners go. Whenever a presidential nominee comes to town, they almost always stop at Lou Mitchell's to shake a few hand.
YOu can check out the top of the Sears tower, the tallest building in North American (used to be the world, but. capably, blame the Petronas towers).
Stroll down State Street and shop or just fanlight show. Stop in to Macy's (i.e. Marshall Field's) or view them do the news at the ABC-TV/Ch. 7 studio. Walk a bit further east and check out Millennium Park. There is ice skating within the winter.
You walk north along Michigan Ave and do some shopping as resourcefully.
There are a few bars downtown to check out (if you're 21). Sidebar, Houlihan's, the shaft at the W Hotel, the Hyatt, which reportedly has the longest inn in North American or Chicago or something similar to that. If you go on the weekend, some of these places may be closed, as most of them cater to the afterwork crowd.
