I used to live within Castelton and loved it. It is also in a fitting school district and in the vicinity the mall and interstate.
The streets of Indianapolis are completely safe. I would look essential downtown or in the city.
dude .. I am from Indianapolis..let me know where on earth are you going to work and which side you want to live on..i can help you...Indianapolis is overall undamaging..
Compared to Detroit Indianapolis is not detrimental. More north you go the safer it is and also more money you inevitability to spend.
I grew up within Indianapolis, and have lived surrounded by Canton, MI for the past 5 years, so I know some just about both. Ivy Tech is the only indisputable community college in Indianapolis. There is nought that is the equivalent to Schoolcraft. Depending on what you want to retribution and what you major is, in attendance are several good university in Indianapolis. IUPUI is huge today and has a student population to rival both the principal IU campus in Bloomington, and the foremost Purdue campus in Lafayette. There are profusely of really good programs near, but I would stay away from their Department of Education. I had a nightmare experience, as did several of my friends. The School of Public and Environmental Affairs is really good. (I own two degrees from within, on in Public Affairs and one within Education). My parents are both graduates of the Nursing program, and have a good experience. Butler University have a really good music program, as wel as others. University of Indianapolis have one of the better Education programs.

As to where to look for apartments, it really depends on where on earth you are working. There are a lot of areas surrounded by Indy to avoid, but their are some really good areas as ably. The downtown area have built up significantly over the past several years, and in attendance is a lot of really righteous housing there, especially close to IUPUI, but they also own a high price flap compared with the outer areas. If you are not right contained by downtown, you pretty much have to budge outside of the 465 loop to find anything safe. There are some exceptions, close to some areas near Broadripple and Irvington. The suburbs are as you would expect better. My preference is Greenfield to the East, and Greenwood to the south. Both of those can find to be a bit of a commute to the Universities though. Warren Township and Perry Towship have a great deal of nice neighborhoods that are safe and verbs. Speedway is 50/50, as is Beech Grove.

I suggest you take a weekend or two previously moving and go look in all different areas. You will in a flash realize which ones are good and which are discouraging. Get a couple of apartment guide books and just start visit them. I've lived in several cities over former times 12 years, and always to be precise what we have have to do.
Suburbs are safer than the city. There are pockets everywhere that are not recommended. Stay away from 38th Street! Broad Ripple is a well brought-up area for you. The rent and home prices are somewhat high, but most ethnic group are in alike situation as you. Butler University is very close. You can draw from to Ivy Tech and IUPUI within 30 minutes. The University of Indianapolis is on the south side. The southern suburbs are nice and little smaller amount expensive.

I'll repeat my warning from above: Stay Away From 38th Street! I have a friend who neglected that statement. His apartment complex had at lowest two shootings while he lived there, and his 2nd floor apartment be broken into.

Have fun, and welcome to Indy!
