The mountains of NC. Driving time is about 6-7 hours, as we are 2-3 hours from Charlotte, NC.
I live contained by the Blue Ridge Mountains, use to live in Charlotte. Nicer ski resorts include the following:
Ski Beech--Banner Elk, NC
Hawk's Nest--Seven Devils, NC
Sugar Mountain--Banner Elk, NC
Appalachian Ski Resort--Blowing Rock, NC (it sucks)
The first 3 are my fav's. I live here year round. I enjoy a gorgeous view of Beech Mountain. Depends on what you want to do, certainly ski or go tubing.
