I am gay, middle aged and tired of San Francisco. Where is a moral alternative?
I am looking for a smaller, friendlier city to move to- ideally in CA.
Any design? All suggestions welcome.

Sacramento is a great alternative. The city offer quite a bit, more than most society know, and SF in with the sole purpose ony hour away, as are the mountains and Lake Tahoe.
I know you want to stay contained by Cali but forget it, I escaped from SF over 9 years ago, don't get me wrong I still love the City but only to visit. Check out this town, I ruminate you'll like it.

Atlanta, around Piedmont Park
I'd suggest Denver or Boulder, although they're not in Cali. Colorado is striking and has a great gay scene. It's quieter and citizens are friendlier than they are in Cali.

As the previous respondent indicated, Guerneville is a lovely town near a vibrant gay community, but it's a bit too 'rustic' for some. That's easily overcome by a short drive to Healdburg, which have some of the more gentrified elements you might be used to from San Francisco. Healdsburg is a lovely place to live in its own right, and it too have a significant gay population.
If you really want a change, you might also consider Santa Fe. It's VERY gay friendly, and is one of my favorite towns surrounded by the country. Despite its small size (less than 70,000 people), it's remarkably cosmopolitan, yet retains various positive small-town characteristics. Years ago while visiting Santa Fe, I be invited to a party by a complete stranger . . . while standing surrounded by line at a grocery store! It's that friendly and open out. The following night, I be asked to join a group of them at the Santa Fe Opera, which is one of the best surrounded by the country.

Atlanta...I believe our population is in the region of 98% gay...not that there is anyhting wrong near that. I think Ted Haggerty just now moved here with that Minnesota Senator that just this minute resigned. They are living it up, dude.
If the ATL is good satisfactory for Elton John, the Indigo Girls and RuPaul it is going to rock your world. C'mon over!
try Guerneville along the Russian River contained by Sonoma County. Small town that has a voluminous gay population from what I hear. If you want a little bigger city after try Santa Rosa not too far from Guerneville. Ukiah is also nice or any of the other small towns along 101, except avoid Willits. It's very scenic and pretty liberal adjectives along 101 up to Oregon. Lots of older hippies moved to the region from SF after they get old and grew tired of the city.
