Clearwater, Tampa and st. Pete all run right into respectively other. - You can find a wide variety of accomodations there is an association of smaller non-chain resorts that you might close to.
There is plenty of shopping and good food (I approaching Frenchies in Clearwater Beach) and the Columbia Restaurant - near is the original one surrounded by Ybor City on the NE side of Tampa that is wonderful (they used to enjoy flaminco dancers on Fri night.) If you are on the Gulf Causway nearby is a transit system that can get you around.
Take a sunshine and drive about 30 min north and run to Tarpon Springs - down by the sponge docks - (if you go on a boat do the old-fashioned orange one they do a sponge diving demo) Great food great shopping and a fun atmosphere.
Have fun - you'll find like mad to do.
If you are not in a hotel right on the Gulf - here are several community beaches that are pretty nice - all enjoy showers and dressing rooms etc. Clearwater Beach Park itself is rather expensive to park - so be in motion south a couple of parks and there are nice beach there too.
I fairly like st. Pete's sand - Pas a grille (it's way south chronological the Big Pink Don Ceasar hotel. (Hurricane REst is good too)
Or turn east at the Don Ceasar and follow the signs to Fort Desoto - outmoded fort there - lots of more isolated beachs but bike rental etc available.
I go to Orlando for theme parks leave last summer and I enjoy them. Sorry if you have no plans to subject matter parks; but just share next to you my travel blog in crust you have interest contained by that-> http://travelerfolio.com
the best place in Florida is NOT Disney... shocking plenty the best place in Florida to enjoy fun, shop and go to the shoreline is actually Busch Gardens ,contained by Tampa Bay. also the best beach is Cocina sand. this beach is so good-looking and you can swim with the dolphins if they are playing within the bay at the time you are here...also try Horse shoe beach for a bit of looking around..the fjord is gorgous. try to rent a boat and go out contained by to the bay, nearby you can get up close and personal next to the dolphins as well..
after you enjoy finished there lift the sky way bridge to ST peters berg .. striking there as all right and loads of shopping. also in tampa near is a place i went to next to my mom and brothers and sisters . i cant remember what it was call but they did under hose down shows with mermaids.. i deduce it was call wickie watchie but please check it out and make sure.. it be great fun when i was little,,,
