Avoid Manhattan at all cost, its too expensive to rent an apartment in that. Try renting an apartment outside Manhattan, for example in parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. I believe this pattern address could help you out.

I agree with the first commenter, the cheapest places to rent will be within Queens, Staten Island and even Long Island, don't discount any of these places if you are looking for affordable. Also, you might do even better to try Jersey. It is still close enough to the city, but it is far more affordable.
