It's not that nontoxic. It's always a gruesome waste of gas. A plane ticket wouldn't be that much more expensive but it's much safer.
It should be all right if she isn't reckless and stays aware of what's going on when she stops. Don't stop at a rest stop unless it's an emergency. Always make your stops contained by a town at a restaurant if you can or a service station. Somewhere there are other populace around. I'd do fast food even though it's not my favorite. Especially for supper. Then you can cart it to your motel room and stay in near without have to go out again.
She should consider joining the AAA Motor Club. If she breaks down she'll hold someone to call for assistance. Also they enjoy a trip routing service and can give recommendation on where to stay. They'll break the map down by how many miles a light of day she wants to travel or how frequent hours and do any routing around construction areas and mark them on the map. Take cell phone. Have plan near unlimited nationwide calling if not if she calls you abundantly the roaming charge will be horrific. This last is merely a suggestion. Go to an animal shelter and adopt a big dog to go beside her. Only if she knows how to charge for it. Don't leave it surrounded by truck when the weather is hot. She'll have company and a deterent to anyone who think he want's to mess with her. Make sure he's housebroken though. Make sure the truck is within tip top order. Check tires, mobile, hoses, get grease change.

To get a rough of notion of the cost of gas take the mileage she get with her truck (15 mpg)? and divide it into the number of miles that the trip is, that will grant an estimate of the number of gallons of gas she'll need. Then multiply the cost of gas by the number of gallons.
