Answers:
I went in February and it was the best holiday ever. It's a bit chilly so a big coat is needed and some gloves but this means it deters some tourists and you get more space when you go to attractions. We went up the Empire State Building on the night and it was almost empty and the nighttime views are amazing.
It largely depends where you go shopping, obviously there are some rather expensive outlets but Macys is a fantastic store to visit and isn't too pricey. Also if your the sporty type a visit to NikeTown and the Reebok store are in order as there are some great deals to be had.
Just think how much you spend in England and take a little bit more to cover the attraction expenses and such and you should be fine. Hope you enjoy it!
I went last Feb it was great you will love it .I didn't find it too expensive .Here are the rules:
1 Use the subway, it takes a little getting used to but they are frequent and a $10 ticket gets you anywhere in the city 6 times or $2 per journey.as long as you stay on the system you can change trains and direction so if you over shoot you just change platforms and go back.
2. Go to Century 21 it's a department store near Ground zero the stuff is unbelievably cheap and good quality from thermals (youll need em) to designer hand bags and perfume,You can also get a decent extra suitcase for your booty.
3.Take a tour bus they cost a bit but well worth it, ask the guides about the best places to shop there are places to go for fakes or the real stuff depending what you want.
4.Take a rickshaw around Central park they wern't busy last Feb and they will lower the price if you look unimpressed with the first price (Very romantic). While you are up that way go to the natural history museum ,they give a suggested entry price and you can offer them what you want to pay $1 doller each is OK . good for half a day and it's warm.
5 Don't eat at Macdonalds ! Try any of the local places cafe's ect( look in the window ,if there are tourist in there go to the next one) .We ate breakfast at a cafe around the corner every morning for a whole week .cheap exellent service loads of coffee you get the picture
6. Take the Statten island ferry ,it's free and you get a great veiw of the statue of liberty.
7.Buy your suveneirs from China town NOT the tourist places
8. Go to Brooklyn and find Joes place for the best cheese cake in the world .
9 You can buy Broadway tickets if you que up at the ticket boothes at the Marriot Times square. Guides will tell you when to go to get tickets at around half price .I didn't believe it but it's true.
10 Enjoy yourselves.
My wife and I went for a week and spent around £1000 including a broadway show and loads of gifts and cheese cake .We were well fed and had one of the best holidays of our lives.
New York takes the term 'busy' to a whole new level, it's constant and in your face but, unlike London, I have never felt threatened or unsafe walking around Manhattan.
The infrastructure is crumbling, bad roads and sidewalks, but it's clean, well organised and easy to find your way around.
New York is expensive compared to the rest of the States, but for us Brits it's still cheap. You don't say how long you're going for but about $1000.00 should do you for a week.
The 'natives' do seem a little brash but that's the pace of life there, they're actually quite friendly and disturbingly polite, shop assistants treat you as their purpose in life and not a hindrance of it! I would however advise caution towards the perfume sellers in Bloomindales, if you've ever seen the scene from 'Airplane' with the leaflet distributors in the foyer or Joey selling 'Hombre' in Friends...double the intensity.
Do the Gray Line bus tours, that way you'll see everything 'touristy' and won't miss any of the major sights, you can hop on and off at various locations of interest.
Good luck and have a great time!
yes, it is expensive.except the staten island ferry is still free!
god bless
its very expensive, but the worth of the GBP (pound) would make the expenses seem much, much less. so its actually worth it.
I've been there before and it is expensive. If you want to stay at a halfway decent hotel it usually costs a couple hundred dollars, depending on how long you go for and if you can get a special rate. As far as how is it? I loved it! I want to go back soon.
Well, I went to stay with my son, who had booked me a hotel room in Harlem, which was a disaster. I stayed with him near World Trade Center and I slept in his wardrobe, which was like a small bedroom. New York is fabulous, it's like a playground, I stayed out all night, and met some really interesting people. Go to 42nd street subway and join in the music and dancing. Go to the Metropolitan and look at all the art and have tea in the candlelit restaurant. Just WALK. The dangerous areas are not dangerous. Talk to all the very sad people on the Bowery. Just go anywhere. Don't go to the tourist bits. Just find out about the people. Go to Central Park. Go to all the rough bits and ask them how they live, they will tell you the worst and saddest stories. But then go up fifth and seventh avenues and buy yourself a treat. |Depends on what you want to come away with.
lucky you it is not expensive just now every £ here is worth $2 there and mostly everything is cheaper than here but remember that you tip all the time for all services so if you would give a tip of a £ here you should tip $2 there i will say have a great time but i just know you will especially in Manhattan
New York is expansive, don't know the hotel prices but the pack of cigarrettes os approximately $6-8 dollars. McDonalds in about $7, so is Burger King. Entrance to a night club on Friday is about $35 dollars, with the drink coast roughly $7-10. Taxi costs about $10 -15 to get you from downtown to uptown. You will need about $40-60 to go from the airport to the hotel in Manhattan. I have to appologize for not really knowing the hotel prices, but im sure they are different.
It gets pretty expansive because of the taxi rides and all that other good stuff. i would say mabey 1,000 dollars if you are satying a week.holtels arent expansive either. mabey 70 dollars a night. it depends on the hotel. And new york is awsome. i love time square. and you also have to go to statue of liberty
very expensive ..plan ahead and make your reservaitons for shows and stuff online ..helps you understand how much you will spend before you get there. Dont go without reservations ..very busy in February and you dont want to be on the phone making reservaitons your whole trip ...! hope this helps
The only thing expensive is the hotel.
I have been to NYC 5 times already and 6th time soon.
Because the exchange rate for us is so good it is really cheap.
I get all of my make up in NYC, I stock up and it costs me about the third it does in the UK. Everything in the UK is expensive so it will be really cheap for you in New York.
We usually take about $700 for a weeks trip and we also buy stuff on Credit Cards. That is for 2 of us for 7 days with eating out 3 times aday and shopping and all the touristy things too.
To save you money why not have a look at www.newyorkpass.com we always get it and it saves you even more money.
For anyopne else New York might be expensive but for us Brits it's cheap cheap cheap!
Have a wicked time, I've been twice in Feb (actually got married there) and it is a really nice time of year. The sky tends to be clear although it is cold so you can get great views from Top of The Rock and ESB.
NYC is VERY expensive. Have you already booked/paid for your hotel?
I really depends on what you want to do in NYC. If you are into theatre, become a member at playbill.com to get discount tickets sometimes even half price for really good tickets.
Eating out can be expensive, but the vendors there are amazing. I highly recommend just taking a day and walking through central park(but if you are going away in February, that might be a little cold...)
Have an amazing time, NYC is my favourite place in the world
I live in the UK and went to New York for 4 days in July. It's superb. You are going to love it. I thought it was cheap for designer shopping make sure you go to Blooming dales. Seeing the sights was fair priced too we went to the ground zero museum and you make a donation to get in there. The only thing that is pricey was eating out it's the whole forced tipping thing like if you go to the toilet at the hard rock cafe in time square you have to tip the toilet attendant and in the toilet they sell everything from m&m's to cigerette lighters. I hope you have as much fun as I did.
Im going to New York with my boyfriend in feb too am sooooo excited have never been to America before. Am a abit worried about getting there with all the security and queues etc. Im taking about $1000 im going for 5 nights should be enough.
