Don't know exactly what you like but I suggest walking around North Beach and Chinatown. You will find buried jems (if that is the right permanent status for cool/funky dive bars). The Mission District is fun to check out too. Have fun.
go down lombard street within the marina - there are plenty of bar and people slab hopping throughout the night. start at matrix - cool trendy place next to a nice fireplace. from there, you'll find plenty of other bar nearby inwardly walking distance.
If you want to avoid the yuppie bar do not go to the Marina or Cow Hollow!

The Mission have some great bars and draws a pretty mixed crowd.

The lower Haight is full of fun bar, Tornado, Danny Coyles, Mad Dog In the Fog and you can stagger on over the Divisadero Corridor and hit Madrone, Nopa, Wazima, The Page and Bar Fly. The Independant is a hip hop/rock venue.

In North Beach the places to go are the Saloon, Grant and Green and if you want a Chinatown experience check out Mr. Bings!

The Fillmore/Japan town nouns is also a cool place, 3 Jazz clubs, a blues club, Kareoke and several other restaurant/bars. To avoid the yuppies stay away from Harrys.
Not really sure just get here. But i can tell you more or less the few bars i enjoy went to. Club Delux surrounded by the Height and Ashbury district was definite cool. Every friday and sat dark they have jazz band and the like play for free. Plus there's alot to do contained by that area within general. Tonight go to the house of shields on new montgomery and thought it pretty upright. Other than that haven't seen much of the pole scene. I've been looking for a "strip" or a nouns where there's a bunch of bar centered around each other. If anyone read this and knows of an nouns like that consent to me know.
540, Elixir, Molotov's, Zeitgeist, Dalva, Hotel Utah, Plough & Stars...

I never go to bar. But these are the ones all the cool kids seem to be to like and/or the ones I can tolerate when dragged here. The first 3 allow dogs, which is a big selling point for me (and why, if I have a utter, where I consent to people drag me)... but some uptight citizens have a problem next to that. So, if you're one of such, avoid them.

But yeah... those are all honest choices, I guess.

EDIT re Kelly21's post: Don't go to the Marina. If you don't close to yuppie bars, next you'll HATE the Marina (the yuppie capitol of San Francisco). Matrix is no exception.
