I just final from NYC yesterday. I went to the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty (ferry reservation solitary costs $12 round trip and it takes you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island). I also go to Times Square and just walk around and Rockefeller Center (which is just great to look at). The NYC Public Library which is on 5th Avenue I believe and St. Patrick's Cathedral at 50th and 51st Street and 5th Avenue. I merely did a lot of walking around and loved every second of it. NYC is so alive beside energy. Go to Central Park and check out the carousel and the zoo.
Have fun! NYC is a great place!
Something that's fun and flowing and FREE! Take the Staten Island Ferry - you go previous the Statue of Liberty [from a distance] and get a great spectacle of the NY skyline. You take the subway to "South Ferry", move about the ferry terminal, bring on, ride over to SI, get bad and right back on again [everyone have to get rotten in SI] and ride subsidise.
This is not too far from the WTC site, if you're interested in seeing that, although it's immediately basically a construction site. If you want to see a moving display nearly 9/11, go to St. Paul's church [it's at the NE corner across from Ground Zero]. It's where on earth the rescue people and volunteers sought respite during the rescue physical exertion.
You can also walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Take the subway below the East River to the first stop [can't remember the line/stop name - look it up on a transit authority map] and meander over to the bridge and walk backbone to Manhattan. Really neat - but it can be extremely windy and cold.
You might want to check out Fodor's or Frommer's guidebook websites for more accepted wisdom.
Have a great trip!!
If you are serious going on for art, I would recommend you check out some of the smaller art museums. The Brooklyn Museum is really good and it is conveniently located right by a subway stop.
For a complete record of the musuems in NYC, jump here:

You can check out their current exhibitions to see if there is something that interests you.
You might also want to find a cluster of gallery and see what the local artists are doing. Try SoHo or Chelsea for that.
If you want to stock up on art supplies that are hard to find at home, here are a number of big stores to choose from. Some place approaching Pearl's on Canal St.

The New York Times has an article surrounded by this weeks travel section in the region of walking up Madison Ave. We've done something similar in times past and it's interesting and free (as long as you don't actually start buying things.).

If you hold some other special interest, got to the NYT Travel page. Put surrounded by your topic and set the destination to New York City. See what they have written around. Since some of the articles can be several years old, check on-line to see if the place your going still exists.
