I don't know of Ahualoa. Is it possible that you mingy Holualoa? That is a town on the west (Kona) side of the Big Island of Hawaii. It's a small, artsy town with a big pink hotel surrounded by the middle! Not much goes on here except for art walks (going into galleries) but it's cute and have good view of the ocean from most spots. Very rural but right outside Kailua-Kona and adjectives of the shops and restaurants there.
Honokaa is on the Hamakua coast of the Big Island -- east side, 20-30 miles north of Hilo. The Hamakua coast get lots of rain but is lately beautiful, principally in the morning when the sun hits the grass basically right -- after it rains -- and the locale is the lovely blue ocean. Ahhh... :) Not much surrounded by Honokaa either, except for some small local businesses. One of them is Tex, a foremost place for good local food, expressly malasadas! Mmm!
I'm not sure where Ahualoa is since I've never hear of it but a college friend of mine is from Honoka'a so I know a bit about Honoka'a.
Honoka'a is a typical elderly style town in Hawaii. It's pretty small and is access by one main road. Blink and you'll miss it completely (like Kaunakakai, Molokai). The school (elementary, intermediate, and high) are all of equal street and when you graduate from elementary school you literally cross the street to the intermediate/high institution. Honoka'a is so small that you know what your kids have done previously they even start heading home!
Hope that helps..
