Answers:
try to stay at a hotel that has special weekly rates, that method you save money instead of paying hours of daylight by day.
1 week unlimited metrocards are 25 dollars. I would research the places you are going to see if they hold special days where they hold reduced prices or is even free.

I would still estimate that you two will need at the outstandingly least 2000 dollars to cover costs. It also depends on where on earth you guys stay...

Living in NYC is so expensive... no wonder I'm broke.. :(
It's awfully easy to spend $100-200 per morning for two. Aside from hotels. May be included in your pass.

Meals, drinks...plus taxes. Easy $50.00 each.

I don't presume US returns taxes to Canadians as Canada does for US citizens.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a hotel contained by NYC in summer for <$150/ni - at tiniest a nice one in a nice nouns. Try TripAdvisor.com for hotel comments by past guests [click on NYC consequently "Hotels"]. You might also check out HomeAway.com, which lists apts/condos for rent on a short-term idea. One advantage of this is more room, along beside a kitchen, which can save you some money. As a tourist, you will probably want to stay contained by the "midtown" area, as it's close to or give good access to most of the things that tourists are interested within.

If there is a individual restaurant that really want to try, think more or less going there for lunch - it will be cheaper than at dinner and probably easier to find reservations for.

Also, go to CityPass.com and check out the go past for NYC. You'll have to turn through and calculate whether you'll squirrel away money with this, but it can be other.

Something you can do that is free and really nice: ride the Staten Island Ferry. You won't want to do this during rush hour, as you would expect. You take the carry over to SI, get rotten then find right back on. It give a great view of the Statue of Liberty and the NY skyline. The S. Ferry station is also hard by the World Trade Center site [although it's basically a construction site presently - for a moving story about 9/11, step to St. Paul's church across form the NE corner of the WTC site], Wall Street, etc - anything "Downtown/Wall St". It's also not that far from Chinatown and Little Italy.

Go to the NYNJ Transit Authority website for complete maps of NYC, so you can plan things out within advance. The system is particularly easy/safe, for the most part. Buses run put a bet on and forth across Manhattan, connecting with those that run up and down the Avenues and they also connect near the subways.

If you want to go to a Broadway show [also off-B'way], and are predisposed to take your probability as to what you'll be able to see, use the TKTS booth within Times Square [there's one downtown, too, I believe]. One of you stand in queue and the other go up to the board and see what's available that daytime. Their website [I believe it's TKTS.com] gives details and also list what shows have be available recently. The big hits won't be available, most plausible, but you can still catch a virtuous show, in great spaces, for half price. [We get 3rd-row seats to "Les Miserables" this method.]

I'd suggest getting a guidebook like Frommer's or Fodor's [they own on-line versions], as they recommend itineraries and the best things to see/do.

New York is a great city, but it can be overwhelming. Planning ahead can help like mad in taking out some of the confusion. And, contrary to the reputation NY have had within the past, most citizens are unbelievably happy to assistance out visitors.

Have a great time!!
